Transportation of animals

General conditions for transporting small domestic animals

When purchasing a travel document (ticket), passengers must familiarize themselves with the conditions for transporting animals at the ticket office or on the carrier’s website. Small domestic animals transported on trains must be placed in boxes, baskets, cages, or containers with a bottom (the weight of one box, basket, cage, or container with the small domestic animal inside should not exceed 10 kg and the total of its three dimensions should not exceed 140 cm), and depending on the type of train and carriage, they must be placed in the appropriate areas. The following requirements apply to boxes, baskets, cages, containers, and suitcases used for transporting small domestic animals:

  • They must have ventilation holes;
  • They must have a waterproof bottom;
  • The bottom of the box, basket, or cage must be lined with absorbent material;
  • There must be a secure locking system that prevents accidental opening;
  • The pet must be able to move freely inside (stand up and turn around).

During the transportation of small domestic animals, their owners or accompanying persons must adhere to sanitary and hygienic rules in the carriage and carry out appropriate cleaning.

Pet owners must regularly clean the box, basket, or container and dispose of all animal waste.

Dog owners must maintain hygiene, keep the cage clean, calm the dog if it disturbs other passengers by barking (in extreme cases, they may administer a sedative), and ensure the animal is fed on time.

Guide dogs for persons with disabilities are allowed to travel in all types of carriages free of charge without the need for a transport document. Guide dogs must have a muzzle, leash, training certificate, and remain by the passenger's feet.

Train travel with small domestic animals, as well as large-breed dogs, is allowed on trains if the relevant veterinary documents issued no later than 5 days before the departure date (confirming vaccination against infectious diseases and parasites, diagnostic tests, and other veterinary-sanitary measures) are provided. The passport should contain the owner's name, surname, the animal's name, breed, date of birth, and health information.

When formalizing the transportation of small domestic animals at the ticket office, veterinary documents are not required to be presented. Passengers must provide the veterinary certificate and the animal's passport to the carriage attendant when boarding the train.

If the animal behaves restlessly, makes noise, or exhibits aggression, the carriage attendant has the right to deny boarding to the passenger with such an animal.

Passengers are allowed to carry a dormouse or rat on the train only in a special container or a securely locked cage, and it is prohibited to let the animal out of the container for walking in the compartment.

To transport a parrot on the train, a cage, bird food, water, and a thick, light-blocking cloth should be prepared in advance.

When planning to travel with a cat, the passenger should familiarize themselves with the train's rules for transporting cats, ensure the cat is vaccinated against parasites, and decide on the necessary items for the trip (food, collar, compact travel dishes for food and water, and a first aid kit).

It is prohibited to transport untamed, sick, dirty animals with an unpleasant odor, animals that not trained to stay in boxes, baskets, cages, or containers, or animals that display restless or threatening behavior. Decorative aquarium fish and turtles may only be transported in a closed plastic container (replacing the aquarium or terrarium). In this case, the passenger must ensure the container is properly ventilated.

On interdistrict (intercity) high-speed passenger trains consisting of seat-type carriages:

  • One passenger, in addition to the hand luggage limit, is allowed to transport up to two small domestic animals in one designated hand luggage area.
  • It is prohibited to take the animal out of the box, basket, cage, or container for walking during the trip.
  • For each small domestic animal, the transportation fee is 50% of the full standard class ticket price, regardless of the class of the passenger's seat.
  • Any discounts applied to tickets also apply to the ticket price for the animal.
  • If a passenger does not wish to place their small domestic animal in the designated hand luggage area and if there is an empty seat next to them, they may carry the animal with them by paying the full fare (including available discounts). In this case, the passenger must not place the animal next to another passenger.
  • If a passenger has not pre-paid for the transportation of their small domestic animal and there is little time left to pay at check-in, they may pay the fee for transporting the animal in the designated hand luggage area directly on the train, with a “QU-57” receipt issued by the train supervisor. If the passenger does not wish to place the animal in the designated hand luggage area, they may carry it with them only if there is an empty seat next to them, and the full fare is paid (including available discounts), with a “QU-57” receipt issued by the train supervisor. In this case, the passenger must not place the animal next to another passenger.

In suburban passenger trains:

Passengers traveling on suburban trains are allowed to carry one small domestic animal.

  • They must have ventilation holes;
  • They must have a waterproof bottom;
  • The bottom of the box, basket, or cage must be lined with absorbent material;
  • There must be a secure locking system that prevents accidental opening;
  • The pet must be able to move freely inside (stand up and turn around).

The transportation of small domestic animals is allowed based on veterinary documents presented to the ticket inspector and does not require a passport for the animal.
