Baku Railway Station

The first railway station in Azerbaijan was opened in Baku in 1880. Since this building was mainly intended for transporting oil workers to the oil fields and oil port, it was not suitable for receiving tourists, officials, or foreign businessmen arriving via the Tbilisi-Baku route. There was a growing need for a modern railway station that could serve as a representative gateway to the rapidly developing city of Baku.

The new station project for the Baku railway station was approved on November 10, 1882. The project was designed by Chrisanf Konstantinovich Vasilyev, the architect of the Baku–Tbilisi railway. The grand opening of the station took place on January 10, 1884. The new building, named "Tbilisi Station," became one of the most beautiful stations in Russian Empire.

By the 1970s, the increasing volume of passenger traffic had overwhelmed the old station buildings. A new, more modern station was needed. Construction of the new station began between Baku’s "Tbilisi Station" and the current "28 May" metro station. The new Baku station was, in fact, a station-hotel complex. The 16-story station, which included a hotel, was the largest in the Caucasus. The grand opening of the new railway station took place in 1976.

The next major renovation of the Baku Railway Station was completed in 2017. On February 10, 2017, the station was reopened following a major reconstruction. The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva officially visited the station and explored the newly established facilities at the station.

The façade of the main station building was reconstructed, preserving its architectural style, and the interior was thoroughly renovated. The ticket offices, passenger platforms were modernized, and new escalators were installed. Elevators for passengers, cargo, and individuals with disabilities were added. As part of the renovation, administrative offices, modern commercial and service facilities, mother-and-child rooms, waiting areas, and luggage storage were opened for passengers. Eight tunnels were built, four for station access and four for city exits.

Seven platforms and eight tracks at the station were renovated, and two-sided seating was installed. The official reception hall was also modernized during the renovation. On the second floor of the station building, the "ASAN Communal" service center operates, serving all citizens regardless of registration and passengers using the station.
